Press Release: Embassy of Eritrea response to Today News Africa
The Embassy of the State of Eritrea strongly rejects a May 31, 2021 post published on the
website, todaynewsafrica.com, entitled “Civilian Abuses by Eritrean Troops in Oromia and
rest of Ethiopia”.
This “journalist” from Today News Africa, Noah Pitcher, presents an article deluged with
outlandish lies and irresponsible accusations against Eritrean Defense Force without any evidential
value whatsoever. The intent of these unfounded allegations is to soil the reputation of Eritrean
Defense Force and hence Eritrea, in alignment with the manufactured narrative being relentlessly
created to dismantle the promising future of the Horn of Africa.
Eritrea has repeatedly made it clear that, as the TPLF committed the act of war in broad daylight
beyond the Ethiopian borders by attacking Eritrea’s major cities with long range missiles, Eritrea
had no choice but to reserve its right to defend itself and secure its southern borders, while fully
respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia. It has abundantly become clear that
Eritrea’s detractors are frustrated for they could not satisfy their famished appetite of demonizing
the country even with their envisaged campaign of the “Tigray atrocities”, and thus, extending
their lies to as far as Oromia and other remote Ethiopian states.
Noah Pitcher of Today News Africa is another tool in this continuous diatribe to succumb Eritrea
to her knees in an attempt to further their evil destabilizing agenda in the Horn of Africa.
Apparently honest, thorough and fact-based information is no longer a necessity in “journalism”.

Sloppy Journalism at its Worst
In its “February 12” publication entitled Tigray, Ethiopia”, US-based Magazine, The Week, carries a defamatory story on Eritrea that was apparently cobbled together from dubious sources without minimal verification for factual accuracy and veracity.
The article states: “When Abiy (Ethiopia’s PM) sent troops to Tigray to quell what he said was a political rebellion, thousands of Eritrean troops unofficially joined the fight on the side of Ethiopian government forces”.
First off, this portrayal is a gross distortion of the perilous events that unfolded in Ethiopia in the first week of November last year. As it is well known, the TPLF launched on November 3, a pre-emptive, multi-pronged, and massive attack on the entire positions and bases of Ethiopia’s Northern Command. The TPLF’s goal was to neutralize this largest contingent of the Ethiopian Armed Forces and seize its entire weaponry which constitutes almost 80% of Ethiopia’s ordnance. All this information is in the public domain; much of it in the very chilling words of senior TPLF leaders, who even bragged about the “historic Central Committee Meeting” which endorsed the dangerous war plan.
The turmoil and mayhem that would have ensued in Ethiopia, and the larger region as a whole, had this evil act of war succeeded is unimaginable. But when this dangerous attack callously launched during a harvest time was foiled – remnants of this cabal and network of lobbyists, interests groups and institutions that had supported the TPLF for over 27 years have gone into overdrive to make a scapegoat of Eritrea by fabricating narratives of “harrowing atrocities”.
The Week has obviously fallen into this trap without asking fundamental questions. In the first place, Eritrea’s foreign policy is predicated on cardinal principles of international law; namely the full respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of its neighbors. As to the conduct of Eritrean soldiers, the track record is there. Let alone after independence, even during the armed struggle, the EPLF army adhered fully to the Geneva Conventions and protected captured enemy soldiers. In this regard, the EPLF army extended significant support to the EPRDF forces during the last years of the Mengistu regime. Its impeccable track record on full compliance with all the Geneva Conventions on human and humanitarian rights is a matter of historical record.

Former US Ambassadors to Ethiopia: Fanning the flames of Conflict
Four former US Ambassadors to Ethiopia wrote an open letter to Ethiopia’s Prime Minister last week expressing their “concern on the recent political developments in the country’’. The open letter was published in the Reporter on January 26 this week upon their express request.
While we prefer not to comment on their biased views in regard to the situation Ethiopia, we cannot but express our profound dismay at their provocative and ill-intentioned swipe at Eritrea in their letter. The Ambassadors insinuate a non-existent threat from Eritrea to the “territorial integrity of Ethiopia’’.
Let us first skim through the track record of these Ambassadors whose collective service in Ethiopia spans the critical years – from 1999 until 2016 – of intermittent wars and conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.
1. On 5 February 1999, the TPLF regime falsely claimed that Eritrean fighter aircraft had bombed the town of Adi Grat. This was a pernicious lie advanced by the TPLF to rationalize the second huge offensive that it launched the next day in flagrant breach of the Moratorium on Air Strikes brokered by President Clinton and signed by the two parties on July 7, 1998. It must be recalled that one of the signatories of the open letter, Ambassador Shin – as indeed was the case with the US State Department – kept mum even as the TPLF regime launched a massive war that raged for more than a month inculcating the loss of tens of thousands of lives and huge destruction of property.
2. In September 2003, the TPLF regime formally rejected the EEBC Arbitral Award that was rendered in accordance with the provisions of the Algiers Peace Agreement that was brokered by the US/EU, and that upheld the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Eritrea and Ethiopia on the basis of the colonial treaties and international law. Again in this instance, the US State Department, and the then US Ambassador to Ethiopia, actively endorsed the TPLF’s violations of international law and its continued occupation of Eritrean sovereign territories.
3. In June 2016, the TPLF regime launched an unprovoked and massive offensive against Eritrea on the Tsorona front. The response from the US or its resident Ambassador in Ethiopia followed the same pattern of active endorsement of these perilous and illicit acts.
Throughout these dark years, Eritrea was on the receiving end of incessant acts of military aggression and violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity by the TPLF regime. Yet, its principled stance – amplified at Independence Day on 24 May 1998 in the keynote address of President Isaias Afwerki – was and remains the same: “Eritrea does not covet an inch of the territory of its neighbors; nor will it yield an inch of its territory”.
This is history today. The state of permanent war has come to end when both countries signed the Joint Declaration of Peace and Friendship in Asmara on July 9, 2018. The Agreement stipulates, among other things, “the end of the state of war…the implementation of the EEBC decision” and heralds a “new era of peace and friendship between the two countries”.
In the event, the allusion by these Ambassadors to potential territorial war between Eritrea and Ethiopia can only be disingenuous in content and vicious in intent.

Reminder to all Eritreans in the USA about COVID-19 during the Holidays (No. 5)
As we approach almost a year of since the COVID-19 outbreak, there have been almost 60 million infections and 1.4 million deaths have been reported globally. The United States alone there are almost 13 million cases and over 264 thousand people have already lost their lives due to the virus. The fact that the United States alone has accounted for 22% of infections and 19% of deaths of these global figures, makes it easy to understand it has reached a very alarming stage. The change in weather doesn’t help and in fact makes it worse. Some countries including the United States have been hit with the second wave and are heading into another round of lockdown.
Although there is hope for vaccine, it is anyone’s guess there will be more damage from the virus before the vaccine is approved and distributed. The holiday season and Thanksgiving Day in particular, which is typically a day of gathering for family and friends can increase the chances of spreading the virus. We are seeing more and more public health and government officials making their pleas for caution. Keeping in mind that this holiday is an annual occurrence and understanding gatherings can lead to higher risk of infections, we urge every family to avoid unnecessary travel and restrict celebrations within your respective households and exercise utmost care. Until such a time where there is a solution for this pandemic, we hope and believe everyone will take necessary precautions for yourself and everyone around you.

- ብኮቪድ-19 ናይ ዝዓረፉ ሰባት ሬሳ ካብ ቦታ ናብ ቦታ ምጒዕዓዝ ክፈጥሮ ዝኽእል ሓደጋ ኣብ ግምት ብምእታው ኣብ ዝዓረፍሉ ቦታ ክቕበሩ ይግባእ። ምእንቲ ድሕነት ህዝቢ ድማ ናብ ኤርትራ ምልኣኽ ከምዘይፍቀድ ነፍልጥ።

Announcement for Legal Residents of Eritrea currently stuck in the US due to COVID-19 Travel Restrictions to Eritrea
Legal residents of Eritrea who traveled to the United States for higher education, medical treatment, work, personal or leisure purposes who have been unable to return due to the COVID-19 travel restrictions to Eritrea can now start returning to Eritrea by fulfilling the requirements listed in the directive attached to this announcement. Understand that this is being done under unusual circumstances without regular flights to Eritrea, so it will also require proper coordination and patience on the part of all parties. Therefore, we ask all concerned parties to carefully review and fulfill the requirements listed in directive listed below:
